On Tuesday, April 27th, 2010, the Career Services, Community Service, and Student Services committees held a very successful career coaching event for students at Hofstra University. The event, which was held in the Hofstra University Student Center, paired up 25 seasoned professionals from HLNY with students from Hofstra, Iona College, Long Island University and Temple University for 1:1 professional coaching and mentorship. Each student was given the opportunity to meet with two coaches and coaches met with two to three students each.
The event kicked off with a short presentation by Michael Gatto on the benefits of HLNY membership and involvement. Coaching sessions commenced immediately afterwards. Not only did the students benefit from the expertise of their coaches, but many coaches expressed how meaningful the event was to them. Lowell Fein, HLNY member and head of the Fein Group LLC said that “It was great evening and equally great event. [The event was] very motivating for all.” Tannasia Robinson, HLNY member and Project Manager at North Shore LIJ Health System “found it to be an extremely rewarding experience”. Students were equally as inspired. Dana Moore wrote personally to her coaches: “I aspire to become a successful leader and hope to inspire future careerists like how you and Mr. Sol Torres inspired me”.
Event planning, preparation and coordination was completed by Kortney Peterson, Hofstra University student and leader of Hofstra’s Health Education Network, Michael Gatto, Student Service’s Committee Chair and Associate Executive Director at Harlem Hospital and Elizabeth Eldridge, Community Service Committee Chair and Revenue Cycle Manager at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The committees would like to thank all coaches for their participation as well as Hofstra University and Dr. Debra Tennyson for hosting. We plan to host a similar event in the 2010-2011 program year.

The Spring of 2010 has been very robust and exciting for the HLNY Program Committee. We have held five events with over 400 attendees. Two of these programs were ACHE Category I programs and three were Category II Programs. The program topics ranged from Career Development, Meaningful Use, Queuing Theory, Board Governance and Positive Deviance. The Program Committee is already planning for the Fall 2010 programs and our intention is to provide you with relevant and interesting program topics with excellent networking opportunities. We take your feedback from the program surveys as we plan our events and are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide you with such great programs across Metropolitan New York.
Starting January 2010, we introduced a new feature in the HLNY Subscription Package. Now included in your subscription is admission to Category I Events. Members purchasing a subscription will experience considerable savings when compared to paying each individual meeting fee separately. A 2010 subscription allows you to prepay HLNY Program Meeting fees. A subscription affords you entry to all regular monthly HLNY Program Meetings which generally confer 1 hour of Category II continuing education credit toward advancement or recertification in the ACHE. New for 2010, your subscription will also entitle you to entry to any scheduled HLNY Category I events within the period which confer 1.5 hours of ACHE credit. To sign up for a subscription package, please visit our website, www.hlny.org, scroll down to the “Subscribe” heading, and click the hyperlink.
It is our mission to provide the HLNY membership with the most interesting, up-to-date, career-enhancing programming hosted by true leaders in the healthcare field. If you have any ideas for topics or presentations, please do not hesitate to e-mail Chantal Volel, Program Committee Chair, at cvolel@nshs.edu and Angela Salerni, Program Committee Co-Chair, at angela.salerni@nyumc.org.

Greetings ACHE Colleagues! Spring is here and Mother Nature has begun her annual ‘spring cleaning’ and we are now enjoying the benefits of this incredible activity. Spring is also a good time to take stock of our individual professional commitments and consider our annual contributions to ourselves as well as our fellow healthcare executives. I would like to encourage each of you to get involved in your local chapter, Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY). As the local American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) chapter, HLNY provides you the optimum opportunity to get professionally involved and to make a major impact locally. Contact me or the chapter directly and volunteer for a committee.
The following 2010 Regent Awardees will be recognized at the HLNY Gala on Wednesday, June 16 at the Glen Island Harbour Club in New Rochelle, NY. Please join me in congratulating them
• Alan H. Rosenblut, FACHE – Executive Director, St. Barnabas Nursing Home
• Deborah G. D’Agostino, FACHE – President, P4H, Inc. and immediate past president of HLNY
• Cheray T. Hamilton-Burnett, FACHE – Vice President, St. John’s Riverside Hospital

• Leroy D. Francis – Administrator, Nassau University Medical Center

There is a Special Regent Award to Dr. Daniel Z. Aronzon, MD, President and CEO of Vassar Hospital, Poughkeepsie, NY. Dr. Aronzon’s Award is being presented at the Hospital Association of New York State (HANYS) Annual Meeting on June 23 at The Sagamore, Lake George, NY.
New Fellow Applicants – Please remember to submit your Fellow Application with the $250 application fee by June 30. ACHE will waive the $200 fee for the Board of Governors Exam once your application has been approved. The waiver is valid for six months. This is an excellent opportunity to take the exam and save some money in the process.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the next HLNY program meeting and of course, at the HLNY Gala on June 16. Enjoy spring!

Greetings!

Spring is finally in the air! Back to World Championship Baseball (Go Yankees!), cheering for the Mets, cleaning the golf clubs and working on those swings, and getting the boat back in the water. But before I get too carried away with delusions of leisure time, did I mention the Healthcare Reform Act has been passed into law?

We in healthcare continue to be busy (are we never not?), trying to figure out what will all these changes mean for our organizations, our physician partners, our patients, and our own jobs going forward. For some of the answers, 4,000+ members of the College gathered in Chicago for ACHE’s Congress on Healthcare Leadership in March, where in the spirit of perfect timing, our opening session was held the morning after this landmark legislation passed. Needless to say, it was “the buzz” about Congress and in each session I attended, it made no difference what the subject matter was, it was framed in consideration of the Healthcare Reform Acts passage. But, it was not all business for the HLNY contingency. We enjoyed a wonderful social event courtesy of our Marketing Committee at Singha Thai Restaurant where 35 members of our chapter gathered to share an excellent dinner and good cheer in true HLNY fashion! A few of us then went on to “Howl at the Moon” and continued to enjoy the Chicago nightlife.

In the spirit of celebration and good cheer, please join us at HLNY’s Annual Gala at the spectacular Glen Island Harbour Club on June 16, 2010 where we will be celebrating our 2010 Award of Excellence recipient, Ms. Gail Donovan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Continuum Health Partners. We will also be honoring our Regent’s Award Recipients: Mr. Alan H. Rosenblut, FACHE, Ms. Deborah D’Agostino, FACHE, Ms. Cheray Burnett, FACHE, and Mr. Leroy Francis. Once again, don’t pass on this opportunity to celebrate with HLNY’s largest annual gathering.

Lastly, please remember to renew your membership in the College. Your membership dues include membership in your local Chapter with access to member rates for our quality programs. It’s easy to renew on-line, so if you haven’t, please take a few moments to do so. Thanks!

Best Regards,

Membership Committee Report – Tara Ritchie

We’ve had another successful year with recruitment efforts! As of March 2010, HLNY membership has increased by 16%. Our continued growth is reflection on the value the membership brings to healthcare professionals as they start as well as enhance their careers.

The winner of the ’09-’10 “Refer-A-Friend” challenge will be announced in June. The referrer with the most attendees who become ACHE members from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010 will receive a $150 gift card to the Apple Store. The program allows non-ACHE members to participate in an HLNY educational program FREE-of-charge. When registering for their first event, non-members use code 24C-3EA.

The Ambassador Program continues to engage new members from the start of their professional relationships with HLNY. Timely contact out to new members has been met with an influx of interest to join committees and become more involved in the organization.

“Grass Root” efforts, such as greeting prospective members at the registration desk of events, has also increased membership. We need help! If you are interested in being an event greeter, please contact Rachel Spiegel at ris7003@med.cornell.edu.

A friendly reminder: To continue receiving regular HLNY communications, you must join ACHE by January 31, 2011. Don’t miss out on receiving regular communications from HLNY about our educational programs, events and other promotions. Join today by visiting www.ACHE.org.

Please feel free to contact any member of the Membership Committee with questions/comments:
